Father and sons in death of a salesman

I.    This research assignment is five to seven (5-7) typed pages, not counting the title page and bibliography (Work Cited) page.  The paper is double spaced, and long verbatim quotes are indented and single spaced as per MLA specifications.
II.    Use 8 ½ by 11 white paper and a 10 or 12 point font; avoid fancy typefaces such as script; double space throughout the paper.
III.    Use MLA format for citing and documentation.  Research is documented with in-text citations and a Bibliography or Works Cited page.
IV.    The title page includes the title of your paper which is centered in the middle of your first page.  The title should reflect the subject matter of your essay and should include the title and author of your primary source.  The title is not a sentence.  List your name, the date, course and section number, Texas Southern University and instructor’s name in the lower right corner of this page.
V.    Use a header (top right) for page numbers.
VI.    Insert a page break before the first letter of the Works Cited, to keep that page last.
VII.    Italicize the titles of films, plays, novels, magazines, newspapers, books, art works.
VIII.    The research paper is a formal essay with an introduction, body, and conclusion.  Make sure that your introduction has a lead-in, central idea, and thesis statement.  Your introductory paragraph tells the reader what you will prove and how you will prove it; it is sometimes called the statement of purpose since it gives the hypothesis of your paper.  The topic sentences of your body paragraphs develop the ideas stated in your thesis, and everything within the body paragraphs should support the respective topic sentences.
IX.    The Bibliography or Works Cited page includes the name of your primary source and secondary sources referenced in your essay.  A documented paper reflects research, literary investigation on a topic.  Please be certain to reference secondary sources to support your generalizations etc.
X.    Research papers are due November 21, 2013; please submit electronically in SafeAssign on Blackboard and turn in a hard copy by 5:00 p.m. on the due date.  No extensions, please.    All topics must be approved by instructor.

Possible Topics:  Essays are based on Miller’s Death of a Salesman or Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea as primary source.  You may explore thematic concerns, literary techniques and trends, literary movements, stylistic concerns, gender portraits, differences and/or conflicts; characterizations, literary authority and critical theories
