This paper reviews three articles that have used grounded theory, phenomenology and consensual research approaches in qualitative research. Each article analyses how the three techniques have been applied in the relevant articles. The three journals include “Reincentivising Work: A grounded theory of work and sick leave” by Hans O. Thulesius and Birgitta E. Grahn from the Grounded theory review, “The Social Construction of Women and Disordered Eating Patterns” by Niva Piran and Holly Cormier from the Journal of Counseling Psychology and “The Temporal Dimension of Addiction” by Ryan Kemp.s

Thulesius, Hans O., Grahn, Birgitta E. “Reincentivising Work: A grounded theory of work and sick leave”. The Grounded Theory Review, (2007). 6. 2. Print.  47-66

a. How did the authors situate their study in a particular paradigm (philosophical tradition)?

The authors situated their study along critical theory. The authors critically examined the issue at hand and applied relevant literature to construct the reincentivising theory.

b. How did the paradigm selected by the authors fit the conclusion of the literature review, the research question(s), the intended purpose(s), and the strategy of inquiry?

The choice of paradigm being critical theory fit the research questions that were keen on critically defining the issues. The intent of the research was aimed at demystifying the relationship between work and sick leave making critical theory an effective strategy for the research

c. Which strategy of inquiry was adopted? Write down the corresponding data collection method and analytic procedure utilized by the authors.

The strategy of inquiry adopted by the authors was grounded theory. Data was collected from 130 individual interviews. The interviews were of individuals working or on sick leave, social security officers, physicians and relevant literature. The theory of reincentivising work is a theory that was developed from hundreds of typed and handwritten memos. The grounded theory analysis was aimed at generating theoretical concepts removed from time, place and people.

d. How did the authors provide a “thick description” of the participants, the con-text, and their own perspectives about the phenomenon under investigation?

The authors gave a comprehensive description of the research participants and the contexts by differentiating the issues set out for discussion. The issues at hand were work and sick leave. It was important for them define the issues separately for better understanding when the issues were merged for discussion. This gave them proper insights that enabled them to describe the situations effectively.

e. How did the authors present their findings and their interpretations of the results?

The authors presented their findings by giving a comparison of drivers and traps that affect a worker. In this sense, the authors compare the behavior observed in individuals while working with their behavior after sick leave. The comparisons made are discussed to reveal the relationship between the effects of sick leave on work and the nature of an individual’s work before falling sick. The presentation of the results and their interpretations are therefore very descriptive.

f. What methods did the authors utilize to establish the trustworthiness of their research?

The authors used various data collection methods to ensure the authenticity of the research. The first significant method was the interview method that involved working people and people on sick leave. The interview process also included healthcare professionals and focus groups. To verify the data collected in the interviews, the authors used relevant literature to determine the similarities or differences inherent in other research.

Piran, Niva; Cormier, Holly C. “The Social Construction of Women and Disordered Eating Patterns”. Journal of Counseling Psychology. 52.4. (2005). Print. 549-558 (Article 2)

a. How did the authors situate their study in a particular paradigm (philosophical tradition)?

The authors situated their paradigm on the theory of constructivism.

b. How did the paradigm selected by the authors fit the conclusion of the literature review, the research question(s), the intended purpose(s), and the strategy of inquiry?

The article aimed at understanding the individual motivations for the eating disorders among the women.

c. Which strategy of inquiry was adopted? Write down the corresponding data collection method and analytic procedure utilized by the authors.

The strategy of inquiry was the consensual qualitative research by use of a survey. The survey was carried out on 394 women from a community of socially traumatized women and its relation to eating disorders. The survey was used as a sampling method to ensure that the participants had the necessary experience for the research process.

d. How did the authors provide a “thick description” of the participants, the con-text, and their own perspectives about the phenomenon under investigation?

The authors provided an extensive description of the results by identifying the individual issues influence by their surroundings that led them to developing eating disorders. This assessment was vital in shaping the conclusions drawn by the authors.

e. How did the authors present their findings and their interpretations of the results?

The authors presented their findings by delineating the steps that were involved in the data collection. The categorization of data gave the authors perspective into how each bit of information tied into the other.

f. What methods did the authors utilize to establish the trustworthiness of their research?

To verify the authenticity of the data, the authors employed the use of a survey that would help them identify the targeted group correctly.

Kemp, Ryan. “The Temporal Dimension of Addiction.” Journal of Phenomenological Psychology. 40.1 (2009): 1-18. Print. (Article 3)

a. How did the authors situate their study in a particular paradigm (philosophical tradition)?

The author situated their study in the constructivism that looks at the individual experience and the influence of conscience on human thought.

b. How did the paradigm selected by the authors fit the conclusion of the literature review, the research question(s), the intended purpose(s), and the strategy of inquiry?

The choice of paradigm fit the conclusion since the article was examining the influence of the conscience of addicts. The questions asked were aimed at unraveling the mystery of addiction. The research relied on the lived experience of the addicts hence the paradigm was a necessary piece for the strategy.

c. Which strategy of inquiry was adopted? Write down the corresponding data collection method and analytic procedure utilized by the authors.

The strategy of inquiry was phenomenology. Phenomenology studies the structures of individual experience and the consciousness. This ties into how one’s conscience affects individual decisions.

d. How did the authors provide a “thick description” of the participants, the con-text, and their own perspectives about the phenomenon under investigation?

e. How did the authors present their findings and their interpretations of the results?

The findings ant their interpretations were dependent on descriptions of lived experiences. The experiences of addicts were observed to be because of impulsiveness, social alienation pain that affected their decisions. The decisions made seeked to serve the immediate needs aroused by the conscience.

f. What methods did the authors utilize to establish the trustworthiness of their research?

The methods used made reference to previous researchers who had looked into the relationship between temporal dimensions and addiction. The article was simply built on authenticating the claims made by earlier proponents of this thought.
