Reflection Paper: Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core

Competencies

In March 2006, an invitational session led to the meeting of 32 experienced practitioners from the principal stakeholders in nursing practice and education. The group comprised nurse leaders from an assortment of practice environments, educators from private and public higher education representing various degree levels, and the Department of Higher Education representatives (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative, 2016). A principal result of the convention was the formation of a mission avowal to guide future nursing practice: foster a recognized coalition to institute a flawless advancement through all nursing areas that is grounded on an accord of competencies and skills that include transitioning registered nurses (RNs) into their practice settings. Two core competencies are communication and teamwork and collaboration.

Communication

From experience, communication represents the effective interaction with patients, colleagues, and families, as well as developing shared decision-making and mutual respect. Devoid of these actions, it is impossible to achieve the required levels of health outcomes and enhanced patient satisfaction (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative, 2016). In my profession as a registered nurse (RN), communication is among the more significant competencies that I apply. By being a good listener and speaker, I can enhance my future practices. For instance, when I handle children’s cases, I utilize images and pictures to illustrate pain, point to body areas to identify the precise problem areas, and explain intricate details in words that children can comprehend. In nursing practice, one does not only communicate with patients, but their colleagues and their families. Communicating with patients and families will make them feel more at ease since they will discard the notion of distress and mistrust. Informatics, ethics, and communication are integral qualities for role development (Masters, 2021). Effective communication entails utilizing clear and concise written, verbal, and electronic communications.

Teamwork and Collaboration

With the social shifts, information-linked innovations, and emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, nursing education will be inter-professional, mainly focused on teamwork and collaborative practice. There is a significant, albeit subtle dissimilarity between nursing teamwork and collaboration, and both remain essential to enhance patient care and safety (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative, 2016). Collaboration describes the joint efforts between different independent groups or teams. For instance, in practice, if a pregnant client demonstrates signals of a cardiac issue, a heart surgery team will be responsible for working together with others in the maternity wing. I found teamwork and collaboration important in y profession because of the resultant mutual decision-making capabilities and bringing together different expert minds from various departments to brainstorm. The outcome is the improved quality of care and an effective team that supports each other. Teams can establish goals, permit for open communication, assign roles for every team member, handle conflicts proactively, appoint effective leaders, and promote mutual respect.

Inter-professional communication and collaboration in nursing assists to deter medication errors, enhance patient experience (and thus promote Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, HCAHPS), and deliver improves patient outcomes. All these actions can reduce expenditures on healthcare. Similarly, it helps healthcare organizations save money through operational efficiency and showing up of workflow redundancies. It is possible to bolster inter-professional communication through communicating more clearly, offering prompt information, notifying the relevant healthcare providers regarding the clients’ condition, including any transformation in the condition, and being respectful and polite. Collaboration can have the brain-storming effect where different professionals can introduce various alternatives to solve a nursing issue.
