Waste Land Movie

Question 1

Sometimes, most unexpected things happen in least expected places. Behind “Christ the Redeemer” statue that towers over Rio de Janeiro, one finds the world’s largest landfill, Jardim Gramacho. Most surprisingly there are people making a living out of the enormous garbage dumped every day. Many people will do away with trash from their homestead and never think of where it goes and what happens to the garbage. “Catadores,” garbage pickers in Portuguese, make a living out of this garbage by recycling what is recyclable and making. For instance, Zumbi, one of the pickers has made a library out of books found in the garbage. Many would rarely expect such to happen, or even expect that people would live out of what is waste to others. Vik Muniz illustrates that such places can bring forth a living that people would want to associate with by helping the garbage pickers use the trash for making pieces of arts that can be auctioned and viewed in museums.

Being a mother at her age is quite a burden that no body should have to go through in this century. Moreover, having to be the breadwinner adds to the burden. Considering education to be the key to many doors, she might have to consider garbage picking her life-long career since it might be the only available job she knows. Her children too, might end up in the same situation if she does not have any means of providing them with quality education. Going through her life experience is hard for anybody. One cannot fail to feel compassionate for her as well as her children.
